The work of an artist who captured our attention steered the course of our own craft. Sometimes, you can even see those influences hidden in our lines. My first attempts at defined eyes were straight copies of his style, just like how I drew sharp angles for men and soft curves for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I grew older, I came to appreciate his vehicles\u2014recognizable yet intricately detailed. And in recent years, I\u2019ve studied his mastery of adventure and humor, better captured in Dragon Ball than in Z. Writing these lines tightens my throat because just listing everything I learned from him makes me wish I\u2019d had the chance to thank him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">O\u2019Kif<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Alejandro O\u2019Keeffe (better known as O\u2019Kif) was one of the most prominent artists in <strong>Billiken<\/strong>, Argentina\u2019s iconic children\u2019s magazine. He illustrated nearly every cover and created comics in the late '90s and early 2000s\u2014back when I was part of that captive young audience. I can see now how his quasi-realistic style seeped into my subconscious. He was one of those artists who sparked that little urge in me to draw my own comics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Santiago Dufour &amp; Clemente Montag<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In one of a friend's newsletter, we discussed the impact of children\u2019s illustration books on our generation. His illustrations had a polished, vibrant palette. <em>La Mochila de Sumatra <\/em> (The Backpack from Sumatra) was one of my favorites\u2014a story about a seemingly cursed backpack that came alive through Dufour\u2019s art. It was a sticker album book offering a visual journey through different themes\u2014world photography, cultures, curiosities, sculptures, and more. In the mythology section, pencil textures breathed life into legendary figures. \"Scecs\" was the signature beneath a towering dragon\u2014and that\u2019s how I found the master behind these breathtaking illustrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"image-gallery-embed\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/images\/75b5eb71-f80e-424e-b32d-d8ef5ba45722_574x781.jpeg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/images\/2a726f28-ffe5-4c3c-9701-13a760be62a2_576x781.jpeg\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hugo Scecs was part of Anteojito\u2019s roster of artists, delivering drawings with suggested yet powerful lines. Back then, I didn\u2019t realize it, but his style is one I aspire to today. There\u2019s something about how she distills characters\u2019 personalities into each illustration that leaves me in awe. I\u2019m lucky enough to have direct contact with her, and she\u2019s always willing to advise me\u2014yet I still feel light-years behind. Her style is as striking as it is unique. I want to keep learning from the dynamism she brings to her art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gabriel Picolo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This Brazilian artist gained massive popularity with his Teen Titans illustrations, immersing them in casual, slice-of-life scenes. He\u2019s another one I closely study today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"image-gallery-embed\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/images\/1d4de680-c917-4d85-bbf1-f9c5a92288b8_640x800.jpeg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/images\/5bab240e-f3c9-4952-b9ef-09a501bd521b_640x418.jpeg\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"image-gallery-embed\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/images\/8d31d780-c5a3-4f1a-a45e-caf46b9413fb_1440x1800.jpeg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/images\/b8a22846-1506-413c-87b4-df010c77c54f_1440x1800.jpeg\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even when drawing realistic characters (like his Last of Us piece), he retains his originality\u2014something incredibly hard to achieve. I\u2019m especially drawn to how he renders eyes, and his choice of semi-straight lines is one of my favorite techniques<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Audrey Mok<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mok is a Hong Kong-based artist, mostly working in American comics. She uses fine lines, keeping faces simple while emphasizing body language. It\u2019s a level of abstraction that looks effortless but demands constant practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mat\u00edas Bergara<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You might think I\u2019m exaggerating, but to me, no one in the industry draws like the Uruguayan artist Mat\u00edas Bergara. Every piece he creates leaves me dazzled, and I aspire to evoke that same reaction with my own work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drawing Towards Tomorrow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">While writing this post and spending hours researching these names, I connected the dots between my childhood influences and what I do today. De manera directa o indirecta, el trabajo de un artista que captur\u00f3 nuestra atenci\u00f3n dict\u00f3 el rumbo de nuestro propio trabajo. Es posible ver, en ciertos casos, c\u00f3mo esas influencias se esconden en nuestros l\u00edneas. En este post quiero hablar un poco de ellos. Los trazos de la infancia Akira Toriyama &nbsp; Cualquier ni\u00f1o criado en los 90-00 vio Dragon Ball Z en su televisor, impresionado por esos personajes con pelos tan raros, que parec\u00edan salir de la pantalla con sus ondas de energ\u00eda. Nunca toqu\u00e9 un libro de dibujo en mi vida porque aprend\u00ed las proporciones del cuerpo y su musculatura gracias a Toriyama. Mis primeras formas de hacer unos ojos definidos fueron una copia de su estilo, as\u00ed como tambi\u00e9n hacer caras rectas para hombres y bordes circulares para mujeres. De grande apreci\u00e9 con mayor detenimiento sus veh\u00edculos, con siluetas reconocibles y a la vez super detalladas. Y en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, tom\u00e9 nota de su sentido de la narrativa de aventura y humor, mucho mejor plasmado en Dragon Ball que en Z. Se me hace un nudo en la garganta escribir esta l\u00edneas porque de tan solo enumerar todo lo que aprend\u00ed, me lamento nunca haber tenido la posibilidad de agradecerle. &nbsp; O\u2019Kif Alejandro O\u2019Keeffe (o m\u00e1s conocido como O\u2019Kif) era uno de los artistas m\u00e1s importantes en la revista infantil argentina Billiken. Ilustr\u00f3 casi todas las tapas y produjo historietas en el per\u00edodo del final de los 90 y principios de los 2000, cuando yo formaba parte de esa joven audiencia cautiva. Tambi\u00e9n dibuj\u00f3 tapas para algunos libros de la autora Elsa Bornemann. &nbsp; &nbsp; Si bien en Billiken han desfilado much\u00edsimos dibujantes durante el tiempo que la le\u00eda, fue O\u2019Kif el que m\u00e1s llam\u00f3 mi atenci\u00f3n. Puedo ver que haya inferido en m\u00ed de manera subconsciente su estilo, con sus rasgos cuasi realistas. Fue uno de esos dibujantes que me generaba esa peque\u00f1a chispa de querer dibujar mis propias tiras. Santiago Dufour y Clemente Montag En el newsletter de una amiga&nbsp;, coment\u00e1bamos acerca del impacto que han tenido los libros de ilustraci\u00f3n infantil en nuestra generaci\u00f3n. Y cuando pienso en impacto de la ilustraci\u00f3n infantil, pienso en los peque\u00f1os cuentos de las colecciones de la otra revista infantil ic\u00f3nica de nuestro pa\u00eds: Anteojito. &nbsp; &nbsp; En 1997, junto a la revista ven\u00edan estos cuentos con un tama\u00f1o no superior al de una lapicera. La gran mayor\u00eda de estas historias fueron ilustradas por Clemente Montag, creador de otra de mis tiras favoritas, \u201cPelopincho y Cachirula\u201d. No copi\u00e9 su estilo, pero s\u00ed envidiaba su manera de delinear r\u00e1pidamente los personajes y el usos de los colores estridentes, algo que en la actualidad valoro en grande. Otro de los dibujantes de la colecci\u00f3n era Santiago Dufour, un artista al que pude darle nombre busc\u00e1ndolo para este post. Sus ilustraciones ten\u00edan un color mucho m\u00e1s pulido, con una paleta de colores muy amplia. El cuento \u201cLa Mochila de Sumatra\u201d era uno de mis favoritos, con una historia de una mochila escolar aparentemente maldita, que cobraba mucha personalidad con los dibujos de Dufour. Al igual que Montag, no copi\u00e9 su estilo pero s\u00ed puedo ver c\u00f3mo me ayud\u00f3 a caracterizar el mundo que me rodeaba. Hugo Scecs Rememorando un poco m\u00e1s, me top\u00e9 con mis dibujos favoritos en otra colecci\u00f3n de Anteojito: \u201cEl Libro de Las Maravillas\u201d. Era un fasc\u00edculo que se completaba con stickers autoadhesivos, mostrando un recorrido visual por variadas tem\u00e1ticas: fotograf\u00edas del mundo, culturas, curiosidades, esculturas, etc. En las hojas de mitolog\u00eda, las texturas de los l\u00e1pices le daban vida a impresionantes figuras de leyenda. \u201cScecs\u201d rezaba una firma debajo del imponente de drag\u00f3n y as\u00ed es como hoy pude encontrar al autor de estas tremendas ilustraciones. &nbsp; Hugo Scecs form\u00f3 parte de la galer\u00eda de dibujantes de la revista Anteojito y ofrec\u00eda dibujos con l\u00edneas sugeridas, pero potentes figuras. No lo sab\u00eda en ese momento, pero ser\u00eda el tipo de estilo al que quiero acercarme hoy. Estoy cambiando las l\u00edneas gruesas por las l\u00edneas de l\u00e1piz, donde se pone m\u00e1s en juego el contraste de colores y las siluetas. Las pinceladas del hoy Actualmente tengo bien delineado el estilo de dibujo que quiero lograr. En el presente, son muchos los artistas a los que miro con atenci\u00f3n, escucho y admiro para aprender. Estampita &nbsp; Ya habl\u00e9 de ella en mi post anterior sobre el estilo que aspiro, pero tengo que mencionarla otra vez porque es una gu\u00eda importante. Hay algo de c\u00f3mo abstrae las personalidades de los personajes en cada dibujo que me resulta asombroso. Puedo jactarme de que tenemos contacto directo y siempre est\u00e1 dispuesta a aconsejarme, y a\u00fan as\u00ed siento que estoy a a\u00f1os luz suyo. Sea como sea, su estilo es tan llamativo como \u00fanico. Quiero seguir nutri\u00e9ndome del dinamismo que impone en sus ilustraciones. Gabriel Picolo Artista brasile\u00f1o que cobr\u00f3 mucha popularidad con sus dibujos de los Teen Titans, inmersos en escenas casuales, es otro de los que m\u00e1s observo actualmente. Incluso cuando dibuja personales reales (como la ilustraci\u00f3n de Last of Us), mantiene su originalidad, algo que es muy dif\u00edcil de lograr. Soy particularmente fan\u00e1tico de su manera de hacer los ojos, adem\u00e1s de que la decisi\u00f3n de hacer l\u00edneas semi rectas, es una de mis elecciones favoritas. Audrey Mok Mok es una artista hongkon\u00e9s, mayormente dedicada a la industria del comic estadounidense. La descubr\u00ed de casualidad hace varios a\u00f1os y cuando vi sus artes de tapa por primera vez pens\u00e9: \u201cas\u00ed quiero hacer las caras\u201d. Al igual que Picolo, me gusta c\u00f3mo dibuja las miradas y trato de emular ese estilo. Usa l\u00edneas finas y sus caras no tienen demasiados detalles, priorizando la simpleza y haciendo m\u00e1s foco en las expresiones corporales. Es un nivel de abstracci\u00f3n que parece f\u00e1cil, pero s\u00f3lo se logra con trabajo constante. Mat\u00edas Bergara Creer\u00e1n que exagero pero para m\u00ed, no hay nadie con el estilo del uruguayo Mat\u00edas Bergara en la industria.
