Diego Agrimbau is an award-winning Argentine comic book writer.<\/a> In 2020, after a failed attempt due to limited slots, I finally enrolled in his comic scriptwriting workshop. The first year focused on foundational techniques, while the second delved into group critiques of each student\u2019s project. It was there that an idea took its final shape for a graphic novel.<\/p>\n

The Seed of the Story<\/h2>\n

One of the first exercises involved what Agrimbau calls \"absolutes\"\u2014concepts pushed to their extreme to spark ideas. Think\u00a0\"a world where no one can read\"<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0\"everyone can fly except one person.\"<\/em>\u00a0From this exercise emerged the premise I became obsessed with:\u00a0\"Every time you fall in love, you cease to exist.\" The first draft, tentatively titled\u00a0LOVE<\/strong>, read:<\/p>\n

\"In a society where falling in love literally means committing suicide, a group of young people will search for the one person who loved\u2026 and survived to tell the tale.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This idea captivated me so deeply that I chose to develop it into a graphic novel during the workshop\u2019s second year. And that\u2019s the story I want to share with you today.<\/p>\n

A Kingdom of Oppression<\/h2>\n

In the realm of Sinelumih, the King enforces one unbreakable law: the only permitted bonds are heterosexual marriages for reproduction. Sons are drafted into the Royal Army and groomed as potential heirs.<\/p>\n

Those who defy these rules are branded on their hands and cast out as\u00a0\"The Marked.\"\u00a0Imprisoned or exiled, they\u2019re shunned by society. The people accept this order\u2014because it\u2019s all they\u2019ve ever known. But what happens when certain souls dare to challenge it?<\/p>\n

KLARA: The Girl Who Questions Everything<\/h3>\n

Originally named Clara\u2014a Philosophy and Literature student in a fictionalized Buenos Aires\u2014she evolved into Klara, a tavern girl in Sinelumih. Yet her core remained unchanged: compassionate, curious, and driven by a need to help others.<\/p>\n

Klara is the story\u2019s anchor. Through her eyes, we see the kingdom\u2019s injustices and the lines waiting to be crossed. Drawing her was a challenge. I sketched her a thousand times in different styles, chasing the perfect balance of warmth and innocence.<\/p>\n

VERA: The Cynical Merchant<\/h3>\n

Klara doesn\u2019t walk alone. Enter Vera, a nomadic trader. From the start, I pictured her with a massive cart, peddling wares from town to town. Her knowledge of the world beyond makes her sharper and less naive than Klara.<\/p>\n

Their bond is unshakable\u2014they\u2019re each other\u2019s safety net.<\/p>\n

When I drew them, I gave Vera faintly magical hands to hint at her supernatural ties, though her real power lies in her street smarts.<\/p>\n

She sells potions (some to numb the pain of arranged marriages), a trade that forges her alliance with Klara.<\/p>\n

FERING: The reluctant heir<\/h3>\n

At first, Fering was just a love interest for Klara\u2014a flat, forgettable side character. I even considered cutting him entirely.<\/p>\n

Then, while watching\u00a0Sex Education, Adam\u2019s character inspired a reinvention.\u00a0What if Fering defied his fate? What if he rebelled against the Crown?\u00a0Suddenly, he had depth. His conflict\u2014duty versus desire\u2014turned him into a catalyst for change.<\/p>\n

Fering is the King\u2019s favorite knight, the chosen heir. But he rejects it all. He flees, desperate to find his true self.<\/p>\n

Once I understood him, the story began writing itself. These three characters would carve their own path, a quest for identity that might just reshape Sinelumih\u2019s destiny.<\/p>\n

The Art Style Dilemma<\/h2>\n

With the characters defined, I faced another hurdle: the visual style. Agrimbau suggested styles akin to\u00a0Estampita<\/a> \u00a0(a friend and artistic reference) or\u00a0Gast\u00f3n Pacheco<\/a>\u2014playful, medieval-inspired parody without losing adventure\u2019s thrill.<\/p>\n

But my natural inclination leans toward realism. It\u2019s not that I dislike Estampita\u2019s style; it just doesn\u2019t flow organically for me. This week, I experimented to find a middle ground\u2014a visual voice true to my story, not forced into someone else\u2019s mold.<\/p>\n

A Universe Unfolding<\/h2>\n

There\u2019s still so much to explore: characters yet to be introduced, finer details to polish, pivotal choices (like adding a fourth protagonist). The symbolism behind their names, the lore of Sinelumih\u2014it\u2019s all a work in progress.<\/p>\n

Diego Agrimbau es un premiado y reconocido guionista de historietas argentino. En el 2020, despu\u00e9s de un fallido intento por falta de cupos, pude inscribirme a su taller de gui\u00f3n de historieta. El primer a\u00f1o se centr\u00f3 en los fundamentos del gui\u00f3n, mientras que el segundo profundiz\u00f3 en el an\u00e1lisis grupal de los proyectos de cada alumno para llegar hacia una novela gr\u00e1fica. Fue all\u00ed donde una idea tom\u00f3 forma definitiva. EL GERMEN DE LA HISTORIA Uno de los primeros ejercicios, era pensar en lo que Agrimbau llama \u201cabsolutos\u201d. Esto consiste en un concepto llevado al extremo y germinar una idea a partir de ello. Por ejemplo, \u201cun mundo donde nadie sabe leer\u201d o \u201ctodos pueden volar salvo una persona\u201d. En este ejercicio aflor\u00f3 una idea en la que quise poner el foco: \u201csiempre que te enamoras, dejas de existir\u201d. La primera sinopsis, bajo el nombre provisorio de AMOR, fue la siguiente: En una sociedad donde enamorarse significa, literalmente, suicidarse; un grupo de j\u00f3venes intentar\u00e1 encontrar a la persona que se enamor\u00f3 y (sobre)vivi\u00f3 para contarlo. Esta idea me cautiv\u00f3 tanto, que fue la que eleg\u00ed para convertir en novela gr\u00e1fica en el segundo a\u00f1o de cursada. Esa es la historia que les quiero contar hoy. UN REINO DE OPRESI\u00d3N En el reino de Sinelumih, existe una ley implementada por El Rey: los \u00fanicos v\u00ednculos posibles son los matrimonios heterosexuales y s\u00f3lo con fines reproductivos. Los hijos varones formar\u00e1n parte del Ej\u00e9rcito real y as\u00ed, entrar en consideraci\u00f3n para ser heredero del Rey. Qui\u00e9nes vayan en contra de estas normas, son marcados en su mano y condenados a prisi\u00f3n. \u201cLos Marcados\u201d son socialmente excluidos de Sinelumih. Esta es la ley y el pueblo la acepta, porque es lo \u00fanico que conocen. \u00bfPero qu\u00e9 tipo de personajes pueden chocar contra este orden establecido? KLARA Originalmente concebida como Clara, estudiante de Filosof\u00eda y Letras en una versi\u00f3n ficcionalizada de Buenos Aires, evolucion\u00f3 a Klara, una joven tabernera de Sinelumih. Su esencia, a pesar de los cambios, permaneci\u00f3 intacta: es compasiva, curiosa y movida por el deseo de ayudar a los dem\u00e1s. Klara es el ancla de esta historia. A trav\u00e9s de ella conocemos el reino de Sinelumih, los l\u00edmites a cruzar y el presente en el que vive. Dibujarla fue un desaf\u00edo: pensaba mucho en la calidez e inocencia que quer\u00eda transmitir con Klara, as\u00ed que la dibuj\u00e9 miles de veces en variados estilos, tratando de encontrar su versi\u00f3n definitiva. VERA Pero Klara no est\u00e1 sola en esta historia. Ac\u00e1 es cuando entra Vera, una mercader. Desde el comienzo del proyecto que la identifiqu\u00e9 como una comerciante n\u00f3made, la imaginaba con un carro grande yendo de pueblo en pueblo, ofreciendo sus productos. Su conocimiento del mundo exterior la hace m\u00e1s cauta y menos idealista. Las dos saben que una va a estar cuando la otra no pueda, eso crea un lazo muy fuerte entre ellas. Cuando las dibuj\u00e9 a ambas, le a\u00f1ad\u00ed a Vera unas manos ligeramente m\u00e1gicas para enfatizar su conexi\u00f3n con lo sobrenatural, aunque su verdadero poder es su astucia. Vende pociones m\u00e1gicas \u2014algunas destinadas a soportar matrimonios infelices\u2014, lo que la acerca a Klara en un v\u00ednculo de complicidad. FERING Originalmente un tercero en discordia, Fering surgi\u00f3 como un amor\u00edo para Klara, un mero acompa\u00f1ante que carec\u00eda de fuerza argumental. No me generaba ning\u00fan tipo de inter\u00e9s escribir sobre \u00e9l y hasta pens\u00e9 en borrarlo del gui\u00f3n. Un d\u00eda, mirando Sex Education, el personaje de Adam me ayud\u00f3 a reinventarlo. \u00bfY si Fering desaf\u00eda su destino? \u00bfQu\u00e9 pasa si quiere ir en contra del Reino? Ah\u00ed supe que Fering hab\u00eda cobrado vida y tridimensionalidad. Su conflicto interno, entre el deber y el deseo, lo convierte en un catalizador para el cambio. Fering es el caballero m\u00e1s importante del ej\u00e9rcito real y el preferido de El Rey, tanto que va a ser nombrado heredero a la corona. A pesar de eso, Fering rechaza por completo ese designio: \u00e9l siente que a\u00fan tiene que encontrarse as\u00ed mismo y por ese motivo, abandona el Reino. Una vez que empatic\u00e9 con Fering, sent\u00ed que la historia hab\u00eda empezado a caminar sola. Estos tres personajes iban a trazar su propio camino e iniciar una b\u00fasqueda de identidad. Quiz\u00e1s, entre los tres, cambien el destino de Sinelumih. EL ESTILO DE DIBUJO Teniendo tres personajes bien definidos, a\u00fan faltaba delinear el estilo de dibujo que podr\u00eda acompa\u00f1arlos. Diego Agrimbau me sugiri\u00f3 tanto el estilo de Estampita (amiga y una de mis referentes) como el de Gast\u00f3n Pacheco, en tono parodia del g\u00e9nero medieval, pero sin perder la aventura y dinamismo. Sin embargo, mi tendencia natural hacia el realismo me llev\u00f3 a buscar un equilibrio. No es que el estilo de Estampita no me guste, sino que no me fluye de manera org\u00e1nica. Esta semana me tom\u00e9 el tiempo de ensayar una voz visual propia, respetando mi historia y sin tener que forzar un estilo ajeno. UN UNIVERSO POR EXPLORAR Quedan personajes que a\u00fan no les present\u00e9, detalles finos por pulir y decisiones importantes por tomar (como la posible inclusi\u00f3n de un cuarto personaje nuevo). El significado de los nombres de cada uno, los simbolismos y el destino de Sinelumih siguen en construcci\u00f3n. En diferentes entregas voy a ir compartiendo este proyecto en crecimiento, pero me encantar\u00eda leerlos a ustedes. \u00bfQu\u00e9 les causan los personajes? \u00bfQu\u00e9 piensan que va a pasar? \u00bfQu\u00e9 preguntas les surgieron?. Acomp\u00e1\u00f1enme en este proceso creativo lento pero muy apasionado.
